Ocean Layers

Today we discovered that the ocean has six layers just like a big wedding cake! These layers looked like this:

Pelagic in Greek means open sea.
Euphotic in Greek means well lit.
Bathyal in Greek means deep.
Abyssal in Greek means bottomless.
Hadal in Greek means underworld and it's named after the God Hades who is in charge of the underworld!

  1. It was very interesting to learn how their is six different layer in the sea. I now know that Coastal, Pelagic, Euphotic, Bathyal, Abyssal and Hadal are the Greek names for the sea layers and what their meanings are.

  3. It was my first time discovering that the ocean has 6 layers! I also learnt that the deeper you go you see strange creatures, the water gets colder and the colour gets darker. I can't wait to learn more about the deepest layer called HADAL.
