Orakei Marae

Today we visited our marae- Orakei Marae with our syndicate. We had a lot of fun!
We had a powhiri (a welcome ceremony), Ms Lin and the Intermediate girls did the karanga (ceremony call) for us. We sang a prayer in Maori at the end of Tomata's mihi (speech of greeting).

We then had our five workshops. The first one was weaving. We were very lucky to have Sabre's grandma and Bernie teaching us.

We then had kapa haka training with Celes.

Mr Miller shared the story of Matariki with us and we had to turn the story into a comic strip!

We spend the last two workshops in the wharenui, looking at the history and structure of the house plus the kowhaiwhai patterns with Ms Crowther and Ms Lin.

Thank you to all our wonderful parent helpers who came with us!
