Term 1 Week 6

Bleat Bleat Zing

Room 14 read a poem called the Shearing Shed. The poem described the sounds and environment inside a shearing shed. There were some sound words like 'zing' and 'clatter' in the poem. These words are called onomatopoeia. We decided to create our own version of the poem using only onomatopoeia. Some of us recorded our poems for you to listen to and enjoy.

Shearing Shed

The first ewe up –
bleat, bleat,
flailing feet;
zing-zing
near her ear.
Shears cut a mossy track.
Wool curls like soft butter
and spills across greasy floors.

The last sweep.
The fleece,
like a dropped overcoat,
is gathered in wide shiny arms,
packed,
and weighed.

The last ewe totters,
clatters,
tap-dances down the ramp
and leaps free –
naked,
blushing,
as pink as a prawn.
