Explode!

We are learning how to give instructions through procedural writing. Yesterday, we created a rocket with a film canister and half of an alka-seltzer tablet.

Today we tried to create a vinegar bomb by using warm water, baking soda, vinegar and a zip-lock bag. We failed three times before our experiment succeeded!

The following things helped to make our experiment successful:
-We put more baking soda
-We made sure the bag was sealed tightly
-We used a smaller and a lower quality zip-lock bag
-We shook the bag to help speed up the chemical reaction
-We used less tissue paper

Come into our class and we'll teach you how to make the vinegar bombs!

Song Writing

In Room 16, we created songs using the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star". For our communication study, we are trying to communicate through music.

Each group picked out an emotion and a random object or animal out of two separate jars.

Abhinav, Bruno, Jordan, Zaky and Jim picked "angry" and "giant".

Hadden, Tristan, Justin, Sam, Maxwell and Lukas picked "happy" and "banana".

Romeo, Aston, Jayden, Felix and Ishka picked "happy" and "pizza".
Lucia, Yasmine, Mia-Rose, Gigi and Jae-In picked "angry" and "dog".

Solana, Beatrice, Ruby, Caitlyn and Inginn picked "sad" and "ice-cream".

Enjoy our songs and see how many instruments you can hear and recognise!

New Zealand Internation Film Festival

Last Wednesday, the Year 3/4 syndicate went to the Rialto Cinema in New Market to watch a collection of short animations from around the world.

We all have our favourite films and enjoyed writing about them in class. One of the films is about a zebra who has crashed into a tree. This accident has left him with a new set of patterns. Every time he moves, his patterns changed again. We were inspired by this film and decided to create our own animal artwork with different patterns. You are welcomed to come and have a look at them in our class!

Gameloft

On Wednesday, Room 16 went to visit Gameloft. There are a lot of secrets we cannot share with you, but there are also a lot of cool things that we can.

Don, Beatrice's dad, Alvin and Hannah hosted us. Don talked about different ways to communicate. For example, music is specially chosen to create a different atmosphere for each game. Another example is that the "good guys" were created by using warm colours and the "bad guys" were drawn by using cold colours.

Alvin is very good at maths and physics. He taught us about calculating angles when making games. We also got to create paper planes and try out a fun game.

We learnt that you need a lot of communication skills to be a game developer. You will need to respect and trust other people's ideas when you have a different idea.

It was an awesome trip!

ANZAC Week

Last week, our school commemorated ANZAC's 100th year of the Gallipoli landing in World War 1.

We went into our House Groups and did an Anzac activity. We made poppies from different materials, ANZAC cookies, soldiers, ANZAC jars, medals, drawings with splint pins, magnets, potato printing, wrote letters, music, periscope, marching and war activities on the computer.

We wrote little messages to the soldiers who went to World War 1 from New Zealand on the red discs. There were 59,000 discs altogether. Each disc represents a person who was killed or injured.

We went to the Domain with our buddy class, Room 27.

As a school, we went to the Domain to put down our discs for the world's largest "Giant Poppy".

The stones were from Anzac Cove. They were sent to New Zealand from Gallipoli.

As a class, we wrote a peace poem on "When you close your eyes and think of peace, what do you see?" Please visit our class to read these wonderful poems!
